Rivera and Walker sat at the same table in the same bar, listening to Mateo talking animatedly, obviously excited about the possibility of closing the deal with the two Americans.
âI have the news you wanted, my friends. A man called Herr Wolf will arrive in Argentina any day now, and his destination will be Bariloche.â
âBariloche?â
âOn the west coast. There are no flights or trains, so it is a long drive from here. I must warn you that it is full of German sympathisers so you must be careful.â
Rivera reacted with typical arrogance. âWe are CIA, Mateo. You worry about yourself and your contact, weâll worry about us.â
Mateo licked his lips nervously. âYou are in a foreign country, señor. The Gestapo are still here, undercover, watching everything and everyone. I would not mind betting they are aware of your presence and are probably trailing your every move.â
âThe whole world is looking for Nazis,â Rivera said, ânot just us. The Gestapo must be pretty busy at the moment.â
Mateo shrugged. âIf you say so, señor. I just try to warn you, that is all. You have the money?â
Rivera handed the envelope over and Mateo quickly flicked through the contents.
Rivera said, âYour 10 per cent is there plus a few hundred for a car and gun, as agreed.â
Mateo said, âFollow me,â and he led the two agents out behind the bar through a cluttered, steam-filled kitchen into the car park beyond. He hobbled towards a tiny Fiat Topolino. âYour transport!â
âYou are joking, right?â Rivera said as he walked around the car. âWhat the hell is this thing? A lawn mower?â He peered inside then turned to Walker. âIt has a stick shift. Can you work one of those?â
âNever been in one,â Walker said, looking at the car with concern.
âIt is easy enough,â Mateo said, âI show you if you like.â He opened the door and slipped into the driverâs seat, sliding his dodgy leg in while Rivera and Walker watched through the side windows. âIt has four gears, and the clutch is light. See?â he pressed one of the pedals and jiggled the gear lever a few times before he realised that Walker was staring at the tattoo on his wrist. Their eyes met and Mateo shook his arm, slipping his watchband back into place, covering the tattoo.
âI guess weâll manage. Donât worry,â Rivera said, eyeing the dashboard instruments with suspicion. âYou could have chosen a better colour. It looks like baby puke. Whatâs the engine capacity?â
âItâs 596cc.It will take you all the way to Bariloche without having to stop for fuel. You will not stand out with this car. If I got you a Yank Tank everyone would notice in Bariloche.â
âJesus Christ, are you sure this heap of crap will get us there?â Rivera was looking decidedly uncertain.
âThere are thousands of these cars here, señor, have no fear. They arrived in 1936 and are still sold today! We Argentines love them because they are economical and perfect for parking in tight spaces.â
âAnd perfect for jamming up your ass if it happens to let us down, Mateo.
